You're All Set!

Your Plex account is ready and connected to your friend's library. Here's how to find their movies and shows:

🎬 Finding Your Friend's Library

1
Open the Plex app and sign in with your account
2
Skip "Home" and "Discover" — those are Plex's own free/ad-supported content, not your friend's library
3
On mobile (iOS/Android): Tap More (⋯) at the bottom right → scroll down past "Online" sections → find your friend's server name under the sources list
4
On Web (app.plex.tv): Click the server name in the left sidebar, or use the source picker in the top-left dropdown
5
On TV / Roku / Fire Stick / Apple TV: Look in the top navigation bar or left sidebar for your friend's server name listed as a source
6
Tap the server name to browse their libraries — Movies, TV Shows, Music, and more. Pin them so they always show in your sidebar (tap More → Edit on mobile)
🔍 Can't Find the Library?
  • Make sure you accepted the invite email from Step 2
  • Your friend's computer or server must be turned on and running Plex
  • Try signing out and back in — sometimes Plex needs a refresh to show shared servers
  • On mobile, scroll past all the "Online" Plex content — the shared server is further down
💡 Pro Tips
  • Pin your friend's libraries to the sidebar so they're always one tap away
  • Set quality to 1080p (20 Mbps) in player settings for the best balance of quality and speed
  • Tap the bookmark icon on any movie or show to add it to your Watchlist

Everything you need to get the most out of Plex

🖥️
Your Friend's
Computer
Running Plex Server
Streams over internet
📱
You
Plex App

So… what actually is Plex?

Think of it like your friend's personal Netflix. They have a computer with a bunch of movies and TV shows on it. Plex takes those files and streams them to you over the internet — just like Netflix, but it's their stuff, not a subscription service.

You never download anything (unless you want to). It just plays while you watch, like YouTube.

❓ Common Confusions Explained

🔴

"I don't see any movies!"

The most common issue. Your friend's server has to be on and running for you to watch anything. If they shut down their computer or Plex crashes, nothing will load. Just ask them to check it!

😕

"There's stuff I didn't ask for"

Plex has its own free, ad-supported content (movies, news, live TV) that shows up automatically. It has nothing to do with your friend's library. Look for your friend's server name in the sidebar — that's where their stuff is.

🐌

"It keeps buffering"

Buffering usually means one of three things: your internet is slow, your friend's internet is slow, or their computer is struggling. Try tapping Settings → Quality → Lower Quality in the player. 720p or 1080p is plenty.

💰

"Do I need to pay for anything?"

No. A free Plex account is all you need to watch a shared library. "Plex Pass" is a paid subscription for the server owner — it unlocks extras for them. You don't need it as a viewer.

⬇️

"Can I download stuff to watch offline?"

Only if your friend has Plex Pass. If you see a download button in the app, go for it. If not, you're streaming only. (And that's pretty normal — Netflix requires their premium plan for downloads too.)

🔄

"It says 'Converting' or 'This may take a moment'"

That's transcoding — Plex is converting the video file to work on your device. It means the original file is a format your device doesn't natively support. It'll still work, just takes a second to start. Lowering quality also helps.

🔒

"How do I change my password?"

Go to app.plex.tv → Settings → Account. Your Plex account is separate from everything else — it's not linked to your friend's server password or anything like that.

📺

"Can I watch on my TV?"

Yes! Plex has apps for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Samsung/LG Smart TVs, PlayStation, Xbox, and more. Install the Plex app on your TV and sign in with the same account. If it asks for a PIN, go to plex.tv/link on your phone or computer.

👀

"Can my friend see what I watch?"

Technically yes — as the server owner, your friend can see what's been played. Think of it like borrowing a library card. They're not watching you, but the system keeps a history. So maybe don't watch anything too embarrassing 😄

📚 Plex Vocabulary

Plex Media Server
Your friend's software running on their computer. This is what stores and streams the content. If it's off, nothing works.
Plex App
What you installed — the player. It connects to your friend's server and plays stuff for you.
Library
A section inside a server — like "Movies" or "TV Shows." Each library is a collection of media your friend added.
Transcoding
Real-time video conversion. When a file format doesn't match your device, Plex converts it on the fly. Uses a lot of server CPU.
Plex Pass
A paid subscription for server owners. Unlocks offline downloads, live TV, mobile sync, and more. You don't need one to watch.
Direct Play / Direct Stream
When Plex can play a file as-is without converting. Faster and uses less server power. What you want when it works.

🎯 Get the Best Experience

📶
Set Quality to 1080p, Not Max
Better Performance

Leaving quality on "Original" or "Maximum" forces the server to send huge files. Set it to 1080p (20 Mbps) — it looks identical and buffers way less. In the player, tap ⚙️ → Quality.

▶️
Enable Direct Play
Faster Start

Go to Settings → Quality → Enable Direct Play. This tells Plex to stream the file as-is instead of converting it. Starts faster, less buffering, and easier on your friend's server.

❤️
Use the Watchlist
Stay Organized

When you see something you want to watch later, hit the bookmark icon to add it to your Watchlist. Find it in the sidebar. Way better than trying to remember where you saw that one movie.

📱
Lower Quality on Mobile Data
Save Your Data

Streaming on LTE/5G? Set mobile quality to 720p (4 Mbps) or lower. Full quality video can eat 3–8 GB per hour. Settings → Quality → Mobile (Cellular) quality.

📺
Cast to TV, Don't Mirror
Better Quality

Instead of screen mirroring your phone, use the Cast button (📡 icon in the player) to send directly to Chromecast, Apple TV, or Roku. Direct casting is smoother and keeps your phone free.

💬
Set Your Subtitle Preference Once
Set & Forget

Go to app.plex.tv → Settings → Account → Subtitle Language. Set it to your preference and Plex will auto-apply subtitles every time. No more hunting per episode.

⏹️
Stop Streams When You're Done
Be Courteous

If you pause and walk away, actually stop the stream. A paused stream still holds a server connection. If your friend has multiple people watching, every open stream uses server resources.

🔔
Enable Push Notifications
Stay in the Loop

Allow notifications in the Plex mobile app so you know when new movies or shows are added to the library. You'll get a ping instead of having to check manually.

🌐
Use the Web App for Quick Watching
No Install Needed

app.plex.tv works great in any browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox. If you're on someone else's computer or don't want to install anything, just use the web app.

📌
Pin Libraries for Quick Access
Stay Organized

Pin your friend's Movies and TV Shows libraries so they always appear in your sidebar. On mobile, tap More → Edit and toggle the libraries you want pinned. On web/TV, right-click a library and choose Pin. No more digging through menus every time.
